Description
- Perched above the Pacific Ocean, this
home required a unique design and build, starting with
the demolition of the existing house on the property.
Some of the challenges to be overcome were bluff setbacks,
coastal commission reviews, height restrictions, excavation,
grade changes, and mobilization – to name a few.
- Solutions to each of the challenges
were found. One of the most striking is the radial mahogany
staircase in the entry. Insufficient space to fit a
standard staircase into the design motivated Steve and
his design team to create the stand- alone staircase
which became the magnificent focal point of the home.
- The house sits fifteen feet above
the Pacific Ocean. All natural materials were used to
extend the natural setting into the design of the home.
Travertine, glass, natural rock, slate and multiple varieties
of wood were used to create a home as beautiful as its
location.
- The house has many unique features.
A 500 gallon warm saltwater fish tank is built into the
foyer. The free-standing mahogany staircase is without
equal. The large mitered windows merge the house with
the Pacific Coast, while concrete kitchen countertops
with fossil and abalone inlays contribute to the ambiance.
Custom doors with copper inlays and leaded glass open
out to the enclosed courtyard on the leeward side of
the house and to the large cobblestone deck just steps
away from the beach on the ocean side.
Solid copper and
brass lighting and cable lighting illuminate the decorative
concrete floor and solid hardwood ceilings of the first
floor. Upstairs the floors
are warm and gleaming hickory, vertical grain fir, Brazilian
cherry and mahogany.
- The Vanderpools love their home.
The spaces are exceptional for entertaining friends or
hosting the extended family. The private front courtyard
with its built-in BBQ, bar, and rock fireplace is a perfect
setting for a cool coastal evening. Whether relaxing
in the media room with system-touch screens and surround
sound, or enjoying a meal in the beach-front dining room,
the Vanderpools enjoy the best the Central Coast has
to offer in an elegant and functional beach setting.
- Shear Development made the Vanderpool
home project successful by:
- Redesigning and adding features
during construction
- Incorporating new ideas throughout
the property from its inception
- Brainstorming a “stair fix” that
became the focal point of the home
- Researching all building materials
extensively before incorporating them into the construction
of the house
